What’s new
This Autumn
Correa ‘Canberra Bells’
was chosen to commemorate our Centenary in 2013. It is a very hardy, compact plant bearing masses of two tone red and cream flowers that will be in flower each year for Canberra Day. Plant one now to be in bloom for Canberra’s big birthday bash.
Viola ‘Blue Porcelain’
Is a delightful mix of blue and creamy white petite flowers. It makes a worthy addition to the garden and is perfect for pots and hanging baskets. It has a compact moulded habit and flowers for months.
Something Different
It’s not easy to find that plant that’s a little different to give the gardener that has everything but we love these two releases from Tarrawood Nursery near Bega.
Grevillea ‘Purple Haze’
The only true purple flowering Grevillea. A small shrub with mounding habit 1m high x 2m wide. Fascinating purple/mauve flowers are carried on long trailing stems. Blue/green foliage with bronzy new growth. Frost hardy to -5.
Petrophile longifolia.
A small tufted species growing 30cm high and 50cm wide. The foliage has an unusual loose contorted habit which we love. The small cone shaped flowers are hidden within the foliage. It is an interesting addition to the native garden and looks fabulous in pots.
Winter Vegies – the Brassicas
Winter vegies ( Broccoli, Brussell Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower and Kale) don’t share the same popularity as their summer cousins but they should. They are so good for you. These vegetables and especially Broccoli contain Sulforaphane, a chemical that has anti cancer properties. To maximise the benefit of these vegies steaming is
recommended over any other cooking method.
- Broccoli goes well with almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pasta, eggs, tuna,
bacon, olives and cheese. - Cabbage and Brussell Sprouts go well with fennel, dill, mustard,
anchovies, nutmeg, bacon, potato, fetta cheese, parmesan cheese, soy
sauce, apples and sour cream. - Cauliflower goes well with gruyere, cheddar, parmesan, and mozarella
cheeses, breadcrumbs, parsley, anchovies, garlic, coriander and cumin. - Tuscan Kale goes well with garlic, potato, pasta, onions and olives.
The white cabbage butterfly is easily controlled with eco friendly ‘Dipel’
or ‘Success’ both derived from naturally occurring bacteria. Another
alternative that has proven to be very effective by one of our passionate
vegie growing colleagues is to net with tulle. Its inexpensive, allows
adequate light penetration and the holes are small enough to exclude
insects.
Free Pallets
In the interest of sustainability and creativity we are offering free pallets for pickup from our stores. These pallets can be used to create compost bins, vertical gardens or just kindling for the pizza oven.
